Coaches Development: Evolving Beyond the Basics

In the late 2000s, I bought a domain called coachesdevelopment.com. Now, if you ask my wife, she’ll tell you this wasn’t out of the ordinary. I have a habit of coming up with an idea, getting excited, and buying a domain for it—only to let some of them gather dust over the years. But this one was different. I registered it in 2014 and held onto it, even though I never quite knew what to do with it.

The reason? I never loved the name. I always wanted
coachINGdevelopment.com—something that reflected the act of improving coaching itself: teaching, seeing, correcting, group management, presence, and attitude. Those tangible, technical skills are the foundation of coaching. They’re where we all have to start, and I’m proud to say I already offer two fantastic ways to develop those skills: The Knowledge Daily, our video library, and The Knowledge Pro, the small-group mentorship program I run with Best Hour of Their Day.

But over time, I’ve come to love the name
coachesdevelopment.com because it speaks to something deeper. It’s not just about refining technical skills—it’s about the development of you as a person. Who you are. Why you do this. What drives you. It’s about looking inward and asking the bigger questions that take you beyond the surface level of coaching and into something far more profound.

The Foundation: Mastering the Basics
Before we get too deep, let’s be clear: if you’re still mastering the basics, don’t skip ahead. Focus on your technical skills first. Learn how to see and correct movement. Nail down teaching, seeing and correcting. Plan for good group management and learn to move and live the lifestyle of demonstration. These are non-negotiables, and they’re what set the stage for everything else. If you’re looking for resources to help with that, check out The Knowledge Daily and The Knowledge Pro. They’re designed to help you build a rock-solid foundation.

Going Deeper: The Evolution of a Coach
Once you’ve built that foundation, though, it’s time to evolve. If there is an area of the 6 that i think speaks to this the most its cultivating your unique presence and attitude in addition to understanding the why behind it. That’s where
coachesdevelopment.com comes in. This isn’t about sets and reps or even the nuances of movement correction. It’s about you. It’s about reflection, introspection, and understanding what makes you tick as a coach and as a person. Why do you coach? What’s your purpose? How can you become more effective—not just in the gym, but in life? Its personal development in the guise of coaching development.

This is the kind of work that requires you to think deeply, to have conversations that challenge your assumptions, and to explore ideas that might make you uncomfortable. It’s about becoming the kind of coach who doesn’t just teach people to move better but helps them live better. And it’s about connecting with other brilliant minds in the coaching world to push the boundaries of what we think is possible.

What to Expect from Coaches Development
On
coachesdevelopment.com, I’ll be sharing my thoughts on the deeper side of coaching. This won’t be a step-by-step guide or a checklist. Instead, it’ll be a space for reflection, ideas, and conversations. If you’re someone who’s already mastered the basics and you’re ready to explore the next level, I’d love for you to join me.
If you’re interested, you can subscribe to the newsletter or follow along with the blogs I’ll be posting there. But remember: this isn’t a replacement for mastering the fundamentals. It’s an evolution. You’ll get the most out of this if you come to it with a strong foundation already in place.

Coachesdevelopment.com is my way of continuing that exploration and inviting you to join the conversation.
